The Importance of Regular Dental Hygiene Visits

Professional cleanings do more than keep your teeth sparkling. Here's why regular dental hygiene appointments are essential for your overall health.

The Importance of Regular Dental Hygiene Visits

More Than Just a Cleaning

Many people think of dental hygiene appointments as simply getting their teeth polished. While a thorough cleaning is certainly part of the visit, there's much more happening. Your hygienist removes hardened plaque (calculus) that can't be removed by brushing alone, screens for early signs of gum disease, checks for oral cancer, and evaluates the overall health of your mouth. These appointments are your first line of defence against serious dental problems.

The Link Between Oral Health and Overall Health

Research continues to reveal strong connections between oral health and systemic conditions. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes complications, respiratory infections, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Bacteria from infected gums can enter the bloodstream and contribute to inflammation elsewhere in the body. By maintaining healthy gums through regular hygiene visits, you're investing in your overall well-being, not just your smile.

How Often Should You Visit?

For most patients, we recommend professional cleanings every six months. However, some patients benefit from more frequent visits, every three or four months, particularly those with a history of gum disease, diabetes, or heavy tartar buildup. Our hygiene team at Colwood Dental Group, which includes 14 experienced dental hygienists across both floors, will recommend a schedule tailored to your individual needs.

What Happens If You Skip Appointments

Skipping hygiene appointments allows plaque and tartar to accumulate, leading to gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease. Gingivitis shows up as red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, which causes bone loss and can ultimately result in tooth loss. The good news is that gingivitis is completely reversible with professional treatment and improved home care. The key is catching it early through regular visits.
